ASTM A36 black steel plate is produced to meet standards set by ASTM, whose material standards are widely accepted in projects across the globe. However, some countries may require that structural projects which meets standards set by a different regulatory body. For example, structural projects that require plate falling under EN standards may use S275 in place of A36, as it is generally considered equivalent. While not exactly equivalent to A36, other structural grades of mild and HSLA steel may also be suitable for use in infrastructure projects, as these grades often have properties similar to A36.

ASTM A36 black Steel plate is the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) designation for carbon steel with a yield strength of 36,000 PSI. Unlike most other grades that are designated by their chemical composition, the "36" corresponds to its mechanical properties. This has to do with the fact that while with other grades, their chemical composition is the determining factor for important properties, for A36, its yield strength is its defining characteristic, while the chemical composition is less strict. A36 steel is easily machined, welded, and formed, making A36 steel a versatile all-purpose steel. A36 steel is fairly ductile and can elongate to about 20% of its original length when testing its tensile strength. The combination of strength and ductility means A36 steel has excellent impact strength at room temperature. Because of its low carbon content, A36 steel can be heat treated without adverse effects on its properties.
