Advantages of Hot Rolled Steel Plate
Cost-Effectiveness:
Hot rolled steel plates are generally more cost-effective than their cold rolled counterparts. The hot rolling process involves heating the steel to high temperatures, which makes it easier to shape and form. This efficiency in manufacturing often translates to lower production costs, making hot rolled steel plates an attractive option for budget-conscious projects.
Strength and Durability
Hot rolled steel plates tend to possess greater strength and durability compared to cold rolled steel. The high temperatures involved in the hot rolling process alter the steel's grain structure, resulting in improved mechanical properties. This enhanced strength makes hot rolled steel plates well-suited for applications requiring robustness and resistance to wear and tear.
Malleability
The hot rolling process imparts a level of malleability to steel that allows for easier shaping and forming. This characteristic makes hot rolled steel plates ideal for applications that involve complex or intricate designs. Whether it's bending, welding, or machining, hot rolled steel plates offer greater flexibility during fabrication, enabling manufacturers to create customized components with relative ease.
Availability and Variety
Hot rolled steel plates are readily available in a wide range of sizes, thicknesses, and grades to suit diverse industrial requirements. This abundance and variety make it easier for businesses to source the specific type of steel plates they need for their projects. From structural applications in construction to heavy machinery manufacturing, hot rolled steel plates offer versatility and adaptability across various sectors.

Applications of Hot Rolled Steel Plates
Construction
Hot rolled steel plates are a primary choice for constructing buildings, bridges, and infrastructure due to their exceptional strength and durability.
Automotive
These plates are used in the manufacturing of automobile frames, chassis components, and structural parts, benefiting from their high tensile strength and formability.
Manufacturing
Hot rolled steel plates find use in the production of machinery, equipment, and various industrial components due to their machinability and versatility.
Energy
The energy sector relies on hot rolled steel plates for applications such as the construction of pipelines, storage tanks, and pressure vessels, where durability and resistance to high temperatures and pressures are crucial.
Aerospace
Hot rolled steel plates are employed in the aerospace industry to fabricate components that require precision machining and reliability.
Shipbuilding
The shipbuilding industry relies on hot rolled steel plates for the construction of ship hulls and structures, benefitting from their weldability and formability.
Agriculture
Hot rolled steel plates are used in the manufacturing of agricultural machinery and equipment, such as plows and harrows, due to their wear resistance and durability.
Process of Hot Rolled Steel Plate
Raw material preparation
Steel billet selection
Use continuous casting slab or initial rolling slab (thickness 150~250mm). Common materials are low carbon steel (Q235B), low alloy steel (Q345B), stainless steel (304), etc.
Steel billet treatment
Surface cleaning (flame cleaning or mechanical descaling), remove oxide scale and cracks to ensure rolling quality.
Heating treatment
The factory sends the selected steel billet into the heating furnace for heating. The heating temperature is generally between 1100℃-1300℃.
Rough rolling
Descaling
The heated billet first enters the high-pressure water descaling device in front of the rough rolling mill, and uses the impact force of high-pressure water to remove the iron oxide scale on the surface of the billet. This improves the surface quality of the steel plate.
Rolling
The billet after descaling enters the rough rolling mill for rolling. The main purpose of rough rolling is to roll the billet into an intermediate billet of a certain thickness and width.
Finishing rolling
Secondary descaling
The intermediate billet after rough rolling passes through the high-pressure water descaling device again before entering the finishing mill. The iron oxide scale generated on the surface during the rough rolling process is further removed.
Rolling
The intermediate billet after descaling enters the finishing mill for finishing rolling. Finishing rolling is a key link in the production of hot-rolled steel plates. Its purpose is to roll the intermediate billet into a hot-rolled steel plate that meets the product size and performance requirements.
Cooling
Engineers need to quickly cool the hot-rolled steel plate after finishing to control the structure and performance of the steel plate. There are many ways to control cooling, the most common of which is laminar cooling or water curtain cooling.
Shearing
After cooling, the hot-rolled steel sheets are fed to a shearing unit for shearing. The shearing unit consists of a cut-to-length shear and a trimming shear. The cut-to-length shears cut the steel sheets to the specified length. The trimming shears trim the edges of the steel sheets, removing burrs, flash, and other defects to ensure that the sheets meet the specified dimensions and appearance quality requirements.
Surface treatment and inspection
Surface treatment
To improve the corrosion resistance and surface quality of hot-rolled steel sheets, surface treatments such as oiling, galvanizing, and aluminum plating are sometimes necessary.
Inspection
Inspect the surface quality of the steel sheet for defects such as cracks, scratches, pitting, and scale. Also, check the dimensional accuracy of the steel sheet, such as thickness, width, length, and flatness, to ensure it meets standard requirements.
