API 5l spiral welded steel pipe is produced from coils of steel that are unwound and flattened. The flattened strip is formed by angled rollers into a cylinder of the desired diameter. Interior and exterior SAW seal the spiral seam. At the end of the coil, a new coil is butt-welded to the trailing edge of the pipe, forming a cross seam. The pipe is cut to length and the ends are beveled if required. Spiral-welded pipe is primarily used for water distribution service. The concept of spiral-welded pipe fabrication is the twisting of a metal strip into a spiral shape, followed by welding where the edges join one another to form a seam. This fabrication method starts from a steel coil. The flat and uncoiled steel sheet, after edge trimming for welding preparation, passes through a triplet of rollers positioned in configuration, and oriented at an appropriate angle with respect to the de-coiling direction. In such a way, the steel coil is bent into a spiral shape.

API 5l spiral welded steel pipe there are two welding stations just after passing through the pyramid rollers, one internal and one external, which perform pipe welding with the submerged arc welding method (SAW). In SAW, the metal is joined by fusing with an electric arc that develops between a metal electrode and the edge of the pipe. A layer of granular, fusible material covers the weld area and protects the arc and the molten metal. Internal welding is performed first, followed by external welding. ● Steel pipes of the same width can be used to produce steel pipes of different diameters, especially for producing large diameter steel pipes with narrow strip steel.

● Under the same pressure conditions, the spiral weld is subjected to less stress than the straight seam, which is 75% to 90% of the straight seam welded pipe, and thus can withstand a large pressure. Compared with the straight seam welded pipe of the same outer diameter, the wall thickness can be reduced by 10% to 25% under the same pressure.

● The size is accurate, the general diameter tolerance is not more than 0.12%, the deflection is less than 1/2000, and the ellipticity is less than 1%. Generally, the sizing and straightening process can be omitted.

● It can be continuously produced. In theory, it can produce infinitely long steel pipes, with small loss of cutting head and tail cutting, which can improve the utilization rate of metal by 6% to 8%.

● Compared with the straight seam welded pipe, it is flexible in operation and easy to change the variety.

● The equipment is light in weight and has low initial investment. It can be made into a trailer-type mobile unit, and the welded pipe can be directly produced at the construction site where the pipeline is laid.
