Schedule 40 Galvanized Steel Pipe

Schedule 40 Galvanized Steel Pipe

Schedule 40 Galvanized Steel Pipe is one of the most common and versatile types of steel pipe used worldwide.

Products Description

Schedule 40 (SCH 40): This is a standardized wall thickness designation. Schedule 40 indicates a specific, medium-weight wall thickness that provides a excellent balance of strength, pressure handling, and cost-effectiveness. It is thicker and stronger than Schedule 10 but not as thick as Schedule 80.

Products Advantages

Durability: The combination of carbon steel construction and the zinc coating makes it extremely robust and resistant to physical impact and abrasion.

Corrosion Resistance: The zinc layer acts as a sacrificial anode, preventing the underlying steel from rusting. This makes it ideal for exposed applications.

High Pressure Rating: Schedule 40 wall thickness is designed to handle relatively high internal pressures for water, air, and other gases/liquids.

Long Service Life: With proper installation, it can last 50 years or more in many environments with minimal maintenance.

Ease of Installation: It is widely available with standard threaded ends (NPT - National Pipe Taper),

Products Specifications

Standard: ASTM A53 is the most common standard for galvanized steel pipe used in pressure and mechanical applications.

Grade: Usually Grade B, which has a higher tensile strength than Grade A.

Type: Type E (Electric Resistance Welded) or Type S (Seamless). ERW is more common and cost-effective for most applications.

Ends: Most commonly Threaded & Coupled (T&C), but can also be plain end (PE) for welding or grooving.

Products Applications

Schedule 40 galvanized pipe is a workhorse found in numerous industries:

Plumbing: Water supply lines (though declining in favor of copper/PEX for interior drinking water due to potential corrosion over time).

Gas Transport: For conveying natural gas and propane (check local codes, black pipe is often used for interior gas lines).

Structural & Construction: Handrails, scaffolding (though specific scaffolding pipe standards may apply), fence posts, framework, and protective bollards.

Industrial Uses: Compressed air lines, process piping, and as conduit for protecting electrical wires (where allowed by code).

Outdoor Applications: Irrigation systems, outdoor water lines, and flagpoles.
