12 gauge steel wire is a measurement of its thickness or diameter. A 12-gauge wire has a diameter of 2.05 millimeters (mm) or 0.0808 inches (in). It has a lower resistance to current flow and is generally thicker than thinner wires. Thicker wires tend to have lower electrical resistance, which can lead to better conductivity and less signal loss over longer distances. The wire gauge is merely a measurement of the wire's diameter or thickness, so a 12 gauge wire means it has a diameter of 2.05 mm and has lower resistance to current flow.

12-gauge steel wire are used in kitchen, bathroom, outdoor receptacles, and 120-volt air conditioners supporting 20 amps. 10-gauge are used in electric clothes dryers, 240-volt window air conditioners, electric water heaters supporting 30 amps. 6-gauge are used for cook tops and ranges carrying 40-50 amps. The more nuanced part is that 12-gauge, it means how thick the wire is. This is generally running in reverse and/or logarithmic and/or whatever, I'm no engineer, which means smaller gauge number means thicker diameter. I'm using 22 solid gauge on my breadboard, 12-gauge speaker wire is likely stranded twisted wire-latte thing not a solid.

● Larger diameter wires stay cooler: Smaller wires lose more electricity to heat loss than larger capacity wires. For example, 100 feet of 12 gauge wire delivering 15 amps of current loses 77 watts of energy.

● Can carry more current: 12 gauge is thicker than 14 gauge, but has a different cross sectional area. This means 12 gauge can carry more current (amps) and more electrical power (wattage).

● Less likely to corrode: Galvanized steel wire is less likely to corrode than other types of wire.
